NUS Staff 2012 Champions!!!

They defeated National Bank of Samoa 2-0 in an entertaining final.
It was the third time in as many years that NUS Staff and National Bank faced off against each other. In the 2010 final NUS Staff won in a penalty shoot out after the match had finished in a goalless draw. However National Bank was able to get the better of NUS Staff in 2011 in the third and fourth playoff match. Just like the previous year a penalty shootout was needed after the match finished in a 1-1 draw.
As expected of a final, both teams started defensively not wanting to concede an early goal. As the half wore on both teams started creating several scoring opportunities however the score remained 0-0 at half time.
With the second half getting underway the odd spectator would have been forgiven to thinking that this match would be decided by a another penalty shoot out, just like the two previous encounters. However NUS Staff had other ideas, taking a 1-0 lead through Lipine Peresetene and than going up 2-0 thanks to Allen Netzler. With a 2-goal advantage NUS Staff were not going to let National Bank come back and they were able to hang on for the win.
The result means that NUS staff became the only undefeated team in the 2012 competition. It was also the second time in three years that they have been crowned the champions.
The match for third and fourth place saw Land Transport Authority (LTA) taking on Tradepac Marketing. The match certainly did not disappoint as both teams tactics revolved around going forward and creating many goal-scoring opportunities. In the end however it was LTA who managed a 4-2 win, thanks to a man of the match performance by Chris Faaofo who scored all 4 goals for LTA.
In the other matches of the day saw Samoa Land come from behind to defeat National Pacific Insurance/ Australian High Commission 3-2 to claim the Plate Trophy. Apia Concrete Products won the Bowl final after a 3-0 win against Samoa Ports Authority. British American Tobacco/ Tanoa Tusitala Hotel secured the Shield final with a 3-0 win over Lesa’s Telephone Service. In the Tanoa final Ministry of Finance won 2-1 against Federal Pacific Finance.
