Akina Yamada, a vibrant 33-year-old of Chilean Japanese heritage, has dedicated over a year to volunteering for the This Is How We Football Program in the Women’s Department of Samoa Football.

Her passion for the sport shines as she fervently supports her favourite team, the national squad of Chile, and draws inspiration from Colo-Colo, one of Chile’s most celebrated football clubs.

In addition to her volunteer work, Akina plays as a skilled midfielder for Faatoia United, where she not only excels on the field but also empowers women through various initiatives within Samoa Football.

In March, her remarkable dedication caught the eye of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), leading to her selection for the prestigious “This Is How We Football: Training of Trainers” course. This opportunity highlights her commitment to developing women’s football and her potential as a leader in the sport.

Akina describes her lifelong passion for football as the driving force behind her efforts. She finds joy in sharing the game and aims to empower girls and women in Samoa by creating an inclusive environment where they can embrace sports and cultivate a love for football.
