The annual Upolu Youth League competition quarterfinal matches will take place on Saturday 22 May 2021. The tournament kicked off in mid-March and is divided into 6 categories.
Football Federation Samoa (FFS) has made a few changes to this year Youth competition for Upolu and Savaii including separating the Under 8 and Under 10 girls categories from the mix division.
The Competition Manager stated that these changes were made for the development of women’s football in Samoa and to give more playing opportunity for players.
“It is important that we separate the girl’s division from the mixed categories so that the clubs can further grow and develop their players and their teams”, he said. These players will also feed club senior teams in the upcoming year.”
The Youth league competition is an annual event run by FFS for both Upolu and Savaii.
A total of 23 clubs registered in for this year’s Upolu Youth league tournament which includes two new clubs from Vailele and Siusega.
“We decided to make use of our numerous fields as we are catering to a larger number of teams in this year’s tournament. We’ve have seen a lot of players every Saturdays and it’s a testament of the success of our ongoing grassroots programs for young players”, the competition Manager said.
Following the completion of this year’s Youth tournament will be the Centre’s programme for players with the most potential who wish to continue on to the National Teams.
The Centre’s are a key component in the FFS Technical Strategy which is primarily focused on the development of youth players. It constitutes the second step in the elite or talented players pathway, as it intends to see players who go through it to represent Samoa in the future.
