Football Progress in Samoa

As approved at the December 2009 Special General Meeting the name and logo of the Samoa Football Soccer Federation was changed to Football Federation Samoa or FFS. Also approved at this meeting were the new statutes through the normalization /executive committee which would govern all football related activities of the federation.
The normalization/executive committee has been working closely with the government of Samoa to develop the game. FFS CEO Mr Fredrick Young explained that the support of the Federations patron the Honourable Prime Minster Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi has been invaluable for the growth of the sport in Samoa.
“This vital collaboration with the Prime Minster and the government will ensure that the game will continue to grow”. FFS continues to work closely with all football stakeholders with support from FIFA and the Oceania Football Confederation to sustain this growth within the sport.
FFS currently runs its football community program called “Fun Football’. This program which runs every Saturday from 9am to 10am is designed for children between the ages of 4 to 15. The children are taught different football skills as well as playing small sided games. ‘Fun Football’ takes place at the Football Complex at Tuanaimato and is free for all children who want to participate.
A recent major change was the establishment of a new disciplinary committee. The federation were fortunate to have received the services of two prominent lawyers in Samoa. They are Committee Chairman Ameperosa Roma and Vice Chairman Tima Leavai. The committee will deal with all disciplinary issues arising from competitions. Mr Young said that “The Disciplinary Committee will be vital in upholding the rules and structure of the game of Football”.
May 2010 will be an exciting month for FFS with the launching and implementation of the ‘Just Play’ program in Samoa. ‘Just play’ is a grassroots football program designed for children between the ages of 6-12 which is based around structured activities. This program will be taught at different schools and communities around Samoa. FFS together with the OFC will also be conducting a workshop with teachers and volunteers on how to coach kids to develop game skills as well as healthier living. Equipment packs for this program will also be distributed during the launching. FFS will be working together closely with the Government through the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture to implement the program.
For the future one of FFS main aims and goal is to develop football in Savaii through a FIFA Goal Project. With the support of the Government of Samoa, FFS is in the process of leasing land. This project will allow for the construction of an international size football pitch as well as a technical centre in Savaii. It is expected to get underway at the end of the year. Once this project has completed the federation will be able to hold regular Football programs and competitions in Savaii.
