Samoa national team focused on World Cup qualifiers

The team has been in camp since the 5th of September and has been preparing for the tournament since February 2011. Football Federation Samoa (FFS) Technical Director Tunoa Lui is coaching the team.
On the progress of the preparations Lui stated; “The team is currently in camp preparing for this big tournament which is coming up. The preparation has been really good the boys are very much into it now that they are training together and there is a good team spirit amongst the boys. I see that it’s been very good progress so far for our National Team”.
As part of their preparations for the world cup qualifiers the team travelled to Fiji in August 2011 where they played two games against Fiji and one against Tuvalu.
Lui explained that the tour provided the players and coaching staff with valuable exposure; “The Fiji tour was one of our most important aspects with the preparations. It helped us see were we are currently at with our standard of football. It also gave us some guidelines on what we have to work on, what our weaknesses are and what our strengths are”.
The world cup qualifiers will be the first time that the Men’s National Team will be playing in any major competition since the 2007 South Pacific Games. A majority of the players also play for their clubs in the local Men’s Premier League division. Two players currently playing football in New Zealand will also join the current members of the squad for the tournament.
Since Samoa will be playing the tournament at home coach Lui has urged people in Samoa to come and show their support for the team; ““It would be great if we could get as much support as possible, from our local clubs, fans and the whole country. We ask everyone to come out on the days of the games to offer their support and encouragement to the team. Our target is to win this tournament for Samoa”.
Only the winner of this tournament will than join the remaining seven Oceania Football Confederation teams in Fiji for the second stage of the Oceania World Cup qualifiers. The second stage will be played from 3rd to the 11th June 2012. The semi-finalists and top four teams will than advance to the third round.
