Samoa Football is excited to announce the appointment of Mr Michael Martinez Alvarez as our new Technical Director. Mr Martinez Alvarez holds the prestigious UEFA Pro license and has extensive certifications in various areas, including methodology, game modelling, and team management. With at least ten specialised qualifications to his name, he also has an official master’s degree in sports marketing and sponsorship.
This background provides a strong foundation in both the strategic and operational aspects of sports management.
Alvarez has more than 20 years of experience in coaching and player development. He has worked with clubs and national teams, including the Philippines U-23 and China U-14.
Now in his second week in Samoa, he is eager to develop football in the country. “I believe in the talent and passion here and aim to work collaboratively to create a structured game with its own identity, allowing every player to reach their full potential.”
His goals include introducing football to children as young as five, establishing a clear football identity across national teams, strengthening coach development, expanding the league, and creating a national academy for youth training. Mr Alvarez also wants to boost participation in futsal and beach soccer, ensuring children can choose the sport that suits them.
While he misses his family in Spain, he is committed to this project for their sake, having received their unwavering support throughout his career.
