Happy Students Play Football.

Close to 800 children participated during the day, which saw them take part in different football related activities.
Principal of Saint Mary’s Primary School Sister Masela Tenisio explained the importance of this festival: “We emphasise to our girls that there is not only an academic side to learning in the classroom. Children also learn outside of the classroom by playing sports where they will learn new skills which they might not learn in the classroom”.
During the day students participated in small-sided games and were taught different football skills like running, dribbling, shooting, and passing with the ball. On hand to run the program and to assist the students were several ‘Just Play’ volunteers.
Also on hand to support the students were several parents who were offering strong words of encouragements to their children as they played. One of the benefits of the day was that the students had to work together as a team when playing.
Sister Tenisio also added: “One of the things we hope the students will get out of it is an increased passion for the sport of football. Who knows maybe one day some of them will be able to earn a good income from playing the sport as a professional athlete and representing Samoa at international competitions”.
Football Federation Samoa CEO Fred Young was very please with how the day went and he emphasised: ”One of our goals is to develop football among our young girls. It is an excellent alternative to popular sports for girls such as netball. We see the potential and we want to encourage the young people of Samoa to take up football and make a life out of it .”
