Special Olympics of Samoa Football Tournament

A Football tournament for children and athletes from Upolu with special needs, a joint initiative between Football Federation Samoa and Special Olympics Samoa that has been ongoing since 2010.
Football was first introduced to the Special Olympics athletes through the Just Play program (FFS Grassroots program).
Since the first workshop in 2010 the partnership between the two organisations has gone from strength to strength.
The FFS has trained SOS volunteers to become licensed football coaches who have gone on to lead teams from districts all across Samoa to compete in various football tournaments and games including the SOS National Games at the end of 2012.
The culmination of all the hard work from the athletes, FFS & SOS staff and volunteers will be in November 2013 where specially selected athletes and coaches will travel to Newcastle, Australia to represent Samoa in the first ever Special Olympics National Football team.
Today’s tournament serves as the final trial for the selection of players and coaches who will represent Samoa in November in Football. Savaii conducted the same tournament in at Prince Edward Park, Iva on the 17th May 2013.
Once the team is selected FFS Technical Staff and SOS will work together to train and prepare the team for their first international tournament. This will involve skills training, theory and understanding of the rules of the game and team training camps.
