Moaula United’s well-deserved victory

It was undoubtedly the most exciting and surprising match of the season; Mouala United cemented their place in Samoan football as the only team to have won over the top women’s team who prior to Saturday’s match, were undefeated since their first season in 2008.
Right from kick-off, Moaula were fired up to stage an upset. The young-guns struck first from the boot of promising striker, Hazel Peleti.
However, when the fourth-placed side missed a golden penalty opportunity, and Cruz speedster Filoi Eneliko ran away with the equalising goal in the 29th minute, things looked shakey for the inexperienced side from Matautu-Uta.
Fresh from half-time, a Cruz comeback seemed inevitable as Moaula strikers blundered numerous goal-scoring occasions.
But Moaula’s inspiration came from their president Afamasaga Sefine Kapisi; the veteran goalkeeper has only recently returned to the pitch in her role for which she was renowned for. One may recall Afamasaga’s goalkeeping skills from the days when football was played at Apia Park and Malifa. Afamasaga’s skill and experience saw the old hand making several crucial saves to block Cruz attack.
After 60minutes of breathtaking football, an elated Moaula team were all smiles. Coach So’oalo Faafetai Apelu was thankful and humbled at their amazing achievement.
“The most important thing is to return thanks to God, for without his guidance, we wouldn’t have achieved this result. I am proud of the win but we also maintain a spirit of good sportsmanship and the desire to keep striving to do our best at each match,” said Apelu.
